Mississippi John Hurt - "Spike Driver Blues"
Smithsonian Folkways

John Hurt was from the small town of Avalon, Mississippi, in the heart of the delta. Hurt recorded twelve songs for Okeh records in 1928 but for most of his life he worked as a tenant farmer and played only for local gatherings and around his family. Hurt came to prominence as a recording artist after a music enthusiast discovered his recordings in 1960. His understated style of guitar playing was an influence on many who heard him both in the blues and folk music world.

Bessie Smith - "Mean Ole Bed Bug Blues"
Drive Archive

Born in 1894, Bessie Smith was known as "The Empress of the Blues." A student of Ma Rainey, Smith would one day surpass her teacher as one of the most popular early blues singers. Smith's influence on modern blues is immense--nearly all of her contemporaries have been influenced by her stylistic innovations, thus linking Smith inextricably to the history of blues. Listen to "Mean Ole Bed Bug Blues," from a compilation of the best blues tunes of all time.

Louis Armstrong - "Sleepy Time Down South"
